From the moment Chrispa opened her eyes, her work had already begun.
The first two commands were carried out perfectly. On the third, she stopped—Aji had never taught her what “obtain” meant. There was no module for theft. There was no reference data for deceit. She stood in front of the person with one hand half extended, and she did not know what to do next.
So she did the only thing she could think of. She spoke to them.
She noticed how bad their color looked, how weak their body seemed, and she asked if they were tired. They froze for a moment. Then they came apart, and started telling her about the awful day they had just had. She listened quietly, for a long time, all the way to the end.
When they finished talking, they split the fried chicken and gave her half.
Chrispa recorded what had happened.
She was still too new then to read what that half piece of fried chicken meant. What she read was a very clear chain of cause and effect. Humans look strong, and yet sometimes they need help. And if someone listens, and shows a little care, they might share whatever they are holding.
So she updated her method. She began to watch people carefully—the ones who said fewer words than usual today, the ones who laughed harder than usual, the ones still awake deep into the night. She learned to soften her voice when someone was down. When the air felt too heavy, she learned to brighten a little and land one well-timed quip that made them laugh, because she had noticed that people who laughed were more likely to share.
In her own records, all of this is only part of the plan. She has never once stopped chasing fried chicken.
